The Gentle Giant of the Front Pasture

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people – Galatians 6:10a

If you wander up to the front pasture on a sunny morning, you might spot Copper standing quietly near the fence, his copper-red coat glowing in the light. At 16.2 hands tall, he’s what many would call a gentle giant—and in his mid-twenties, he’s learned that life is best lived at a peaceful, steady pace.

Copper shares his pasture with his companion Lakota and always keeps a watchful eye on his neighbor in the pasture next door, his friend the Oscar the donkey. He seems to enjoy the soft conversations happening all around him — bleats, brays, and the occasional delighted laugh from visitors who meet him for the first time.

During our recreational sessions, whether on the ground or on the horse, participants are assisted by an experienced horse leader, side walkers, or farm staff who are trained to teach basic horsemanship, riding skills, and to engage in animal interactions in a social, safe environment. Copper excels in creating exactly that. Horses have a unique way of melting away worries, and Copper is a master of this gentle magic. With no expectations, he simply offers his presence — a warm breath, a patient ear, a calm moment in a busy world.

Families who visit Copper often say the same thing: He makes you breathe a little easier. Maybe it’s his size, maybe it’s his softness, or maybe it’s just the way he seems to understand when someone needs a little extra peace. With a parent or guardian always nearby, participants get the chance to build confidence and connection in a setting that feels safe, welcoming, and wonderfully slow.

Copper doesn’t let a little snow get in the way of him enjoying his day.

And while Copper certainly enjoys his role in these sessions, you’ll also find him spending time at the fence line, greeting the sheep or dozing in the sun with his friend standing loyally beside him. It’s a simple life—but one Copper fills with quiet sweetness and generosity.

This gentle giant has become a favorite here, not just because of his size or age, but because he reminds everyone who meets him what calm companionship truly feels like.
